About Us

History

Glebe Cottage was originally built in about 1750 and is, therefore, around two hundred and fifty years old. The name Glebe refers to the fact that the word means ‘part of the clergyman’s benefice’ and thus the cottage was in the ownership of the benefice of St Mary's Church.

Glebe Cottage lies at the end of Church Lane and is opposite the former Rectory, now two houses and called ‘The Old Rectory.’ Next door is the site of the Rector’s stable and coach house. Glebe Cottage was originally the home of the Parish Sexton among whose duties it was to ring the church bell.

Location

We are located in the village of Codford which lies in the Wylye Valley close to the southern side of Salisbury Plain and is bounded by the A36 Trunk Road that connects Bristol to Southampton. It is considered to be an ideal centre for exploring the West Country. Stonehenge is ten miles distant, Longleat House and Center Parc are about ten miles away. Bath, Bristol, Salisbury, Southampton, Portsmouth and Marlborough are easily accessed.

The M4 London to South Wales motorway is about thirty miles and the M3 London to Southampton motorway is 32 miles distant. The A303 West of England route is three miles.
